SO, WHAT’S WITH ALL THE BANNERS?
You may have noticed that the NOOBSBLOG PORNBLOG: FREE PORN CATALOG has lots of banner ads all over the place. There’s a reason for that — but it’s not the usual reason.
The average PORNOGRAPHY Web Site is quite simply a mess. The navigation is awful, there are things “popping UP” at you all the time, and it seems impossible to find what you’re looking for amidst a flashing sea of banner ads of all sizes, colors and shapes.
Fellini on acid is hackneyed, but it fits.
The average PORN site looks so bad and seems to serve its purpose so poorly, because the average adult Webmaster is unskilled at Web marketing, and wholly ignorant of a few Web design and architecture principles that make all the difference between having an enjoyable surfer experience and a nightmare.
And because PORNOGRAPHY sells, in spite of the average PORNOGRAPHER, there’s little pressure to change anything.
One, among the various “bad tastes” left in the PORN surfer’s mouth is a dislike of banner ads. Because they are abused as they are (and not just by PORN Webmasters, either), the average surfer doesn’t even see them anymore. They’ve long-ago been dismissed as so much “white noise” by the experienced surfer. And many NOOBS see them as downright hostile, given all the horror stories you hear when somebody clicks on the wrong thing.
This “banner ads = bad” mentality is nothing new, but it’s disturbing that the vast majority of (if not ALL) online advertisers have responded to the growing surfer disinterest/dislike of banners by getting EVEN MORE obnoxious, and coming up with methods that are far worse than visual disharmony and navigational frustration.
Modern Web-blights, like (to my thinking, anyway) the WHOLE category of “*wares” — happened as a result. Surfer attention thresholds went up, and advertisers chased after. You have to wonder where the trend could be leading.
It’s one of my Web Dreams to show Web marketers that banners can work, when you use them thoughtfully and show some respect for the surfer’s intelligence — it’s also nice when the banners are visually interesting and you don’t have to worry what happens when you click on them.
